Coach Fred Lynch was Head Coach at Laney High School for 26 years compiling over 400 wins and making Laney Basketball a respected and widely known program across the state and country.  He currently serves as the school’s athletic director.  While as head coach he directed the Bucs to the North Carolina State Sectionals in 1985, 1987, and 1999.  The Bucs were North Carolina State Runners Up in 1999.  Under Fred Lynch, the Bucs won the Conference in 1984, 1985, 1987, 1991, 1998, and 2000.  In 2010, Laney won the Leon Brogden Holiday Tournament.  In 2012, the court at Laney High School was named in his and Ruby Sutton, long time Physical Education teacher/coach at Laney High School.  He has served as the North Carolina East/West All Star Coach and North/South All Star Coach during his decorative career.  He served as Coach Faulk’s mentor in his early years when Faulk worked as his assistant.  

In 2012, the court at Laney High School was named in his and Ruby Sutton's honor. Ruby Sutton served at Laney as a long time Physical Education instructor.

In the summer of 2012, Faulk began the Fred Lynch Invitational in honor of Coach Lynch and all his service he provided to the Laney Basketball program over his career.  The FLI is now an annual event taking place the last week of June every summer.
 

 

The tournament featured 18 high school teams from the Wilmington area, the Triangle and Sandhills. Each team played at least seven scrimmages over three days.

 

After the exciting events of the tourney, Sanderson High School took home the Gold in the FLI, and Hoggard High swept up the Silver for their team.
